Farmed Animals

Farmed Deer UK Venison Welfare

UK deer farming produces venison from red and fallow deer. The welfare of farmed deer - animals with strong wild instincts and flight responses - raises specific challenges in captive management.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Farmed deer occupy a welfare position similar to farmed bison - semi-wild animals with strong instincts that are poorly suited to close confinement and handling. The acute stress of handling is a genuine welfare concern: capture myopathy can kill a deer that has been heavily pursued or restrained. Extensive venison farming with minimal handling, in large paddocks allowing natural group behaviour, is considerably more welfare-positive than intensive yard systems. The velvet antler industry - harvesting growing antler from live stags for the Asian medicine market - causes unnecessary pain and serves no welfare purpose. UK welfare regulations should explicitly prohibit velvet harvesting without sedation and analgesia.
