Alpaca farming has grown substantially in the UK and Europe for luxury fibre and farm tourism. Understanding alpaca welfare needs and how current systems meet or fail them is important for producers and consumers.
Alpaca keeping has expanded rapidly in the UK as hobby farming, tourism and fibre production have grown in popularity. The welfare challenges are real but manageable: alpacas are herd animals requiring minimum groups of three, they need annual shearing regardless of commercial use, and their initial wariness of humans requires patient positive reinforcement training rather than forceful handling. Many hobby alpaca keepers do not appreciate these needs and keep animals in small, isolated groups or handle them roughly. The luxury fibre market offers little assurance of welfare standards - a premium price for alpaca wool does not guarantee the animal was well treated. Welfare certification for alpaca fibre is an emerging gap in sustainable fashion.
