Positive Welfare Indicators: Beyond Absence of Suffering

The shift from preventing suffering to promoting positive welfare represents one of the most important advances in animal welfare science. Understanding positive welfare indicators changes how we assess and improve animal lives.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

The positive welfare paradigm represents a fundamental shift in how animal welfare is conceptualised. The traditional approach asked 'is the animal suffering?' - a crucial but insufficient question. The positive welfare approach asks additionally 'is the animal thriving?' - experiencing curiosity, play, social comfort, anticipation and satisfaction. This shift matters practically because an animal can score adequately on all negative welfare measures (no disease, no hunger, no injury) while still experiencing a profoundly impoverished, joyless existence. For farmed animals, wild animals and companion animals alike, genuinely good welfare requires not just absence of suffering but active experience of positive states. Assessment tools that measure positive welfare are now commercially available and are reshaping certification standards.
