US channel catfish farming in the Mississippi Delta is one of North America's largest aquaculture industries. Welfare conditions in pond-based systems have both strengths and significant areas for improvement.
US channel catfish welfare during pond-based rearing is generally acceptable - relatively low densities, natural pond environments and established disease management provide a reasonable baseline. The welfare problems concentrate at two points: harvest, where seining causes extreme crowding and oxygen depletion, and transport to processing, where additional stress and injury occur. The economic pressure from imported pangasius has led some producers to intensify systems, increasing welfare risk. The catfish industry's focus on food safety and environmental sustainability has not been matched by attention to animal welfare, and a dedicated welfare framework equivalent to that developing in salmon aquaculture is absent.
