As the Animal Welfare Hub reaches 100,350 pages of evidence-based welfare information, this reflection considers what sustained, systematic attention to animal suffering can achieve.
One hundred thousand, three hundred and fifty pages. Each one a commitment to a particular animal, a particular welfare challenge, a particular gap between how things are and how they could be. The animals these pages serve - the broiler chicken with painful legs, the salmon with untreated sea lice, the chimpanzee in an impoverished zoo enclosure, the kestrel whose grassland has vanished - cannot read these words. But the people who care about them can, and do. Welfare knowledge spread widely creates the conditions for better decisions by individuals, communities, businesses, and governments. Every page that helps someone understand why keel bone fractures matter, or what sow longevity tells us about pig farming systems, or how to support an ageing dog with degenerative myelopathy, translates into real changes in real animals' lives. The project continues.
