Aquaculture Technology Welfare: Sensors, AI, and Fish Monitoring

Emerging technologies including underwater cameras, AI behaviour analysis, and biosensors are beginning to transform our ability to monitor and improve welfare in aquaculture systems.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Aquaculture technology is advancing rapidly and offers genuine promise for fish welfare improvement. The core challenge in fish welfare monitoring has always been observation: fish in large sea cages or recirculating systems are difficult to observe individually without disturbing them. AI-powered underwater cameras that continuously monitor thousands of fish simultaneously for behavioural deviations change this equation fundamentally. Early detection of disease, crowding stress, or oxygen depletion enables intervention before acute welfare crises develop. The technology is most powerful when integrated with automatic system responses - for example, cameras detecting overcrowding behaviour triggering automatic density reduction. However, technology cannot substitute for informed management: the welfare value depends entirely on how effectively alerts are acted upon by trained staff.
