Cat Urinary Tract Disease and Pain Management

Feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) is a major welfare concern affecting cats of all ages, with pain, stress, and recurrence as central challenges.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

FLUTD causes significant acute pain and distress. Cats with blocked urethras experience severe abdominal pain and can die within 24-48 hours. Even non-obstructive FIC involves substantial discomfort. Chronic recurrence diminishes quality of life. Environmental stress enrichment - providing hiding places, litter trays, vertical space, and reducing inter-cat tension - has strong evidence for reducing FIC episodes. Multimodal pain management including NSAIDs and gabapentin is now standard.
