Dog Cruciate Ligament Injury Welfare and Recovery

Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture is one of the most common orthopaedic conditions in dogs, causing acute pain, lameness, and long-term joint disease if untreated.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

CCL rupture causes acute severe pain followed by chronic lameness and progressive arthritis without treatment. The recovery period after surgery is 12-16 weeks of restricted exercise, which itself presents welfare challenges - dogs must be kept calm and restricted while managing pain and frustration. Good pain management protocols including multimodal analgesia (NSAIDs, gabapentin, tramadol) are essential. Physiotherapy and hydrotherapy have good evidence for improving outcomes and welfare during recovery.
