European seabass is a major Mediterranean aquaculture species - welfare challenges include handling stress, sea lice, net pen conditions, and slaughter practices.
Seabass welfare has historically received less attention than salmon, but growing evidence shows European seabass have comparable sentience and welfare needs. Stress during handling, disease treatment, and slaughter is a significant welfare concern given annual production volumes. Iced seawater slaughter causes prolonged loss of consciousness (minutes) compared to electrical stunning (seconds), representing a clear welfare opportunity for improvement. Higher welfare certification schemes are beginning to address seabass alongside salmonids.
