Farmed Quail Welfare and Production System Reform

Japanese quail are farmed intensively in battery-type cages in many countries - welfare reform is needed but lags far behind poultry welfare attention given to chickens.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Quail welfare has received relatively little regulatory or scientific attention compared to chickens, despite millions being farmed in similar or worse conditions. The same welfare principles apply: quail need space, enrichment, ability to express natural behaviours, and good stockpersonship. The near-total absence of welfare codes or standards for quail in most countries is a significant gap. As alternative protein interest in quail eggs grows, building welfare standards from the outset is important to avoid replicating the failures of intensive chicken farming.
