Marine heatwaves are increasing in frequency and intensity - mass mortality events from heat stress are causing profound welfare harm to marine wildlife globally.
Marine heatwave welfare impacts represent climate change welfare harm on a vast and growing scale. Individual marine animals dying from thermal stress, prey collapse, or disease amplified by warming undergo acute suffering. The scale of the 2021 Pacific Northwest event - a billion animals dead - is almost incomprehensible. Unlike terrestrial heatwaves where animals can seek shade or water, marine heatwaves provide no refuge for intertidal and shallow water species. Climate change mitigation is the only effective long-term intervention - reducing emissions is an animal welfare action of extraordinary scale.
