Pig pen design - layout, space allowance, flooring, and environmental complexity - fundamentally determines welfare outcomes in commercial pig production.
Pig pen design is a foundational welfare intervention because the physical environment determines what behaviours are possible. Pigs in barren, overcrowded, fully slatted pens cannot perform natural rooting, exploration, or social behaviour - leading to redirected aggression, tail biting, and stress. Well-designed pens with adequate space, solid lying areas, environmental enrichment, and good ventilation allow pigs to express their behavioural repertoire and maintain good welfare. The additional cost of higher welfare pen design is a small proportion of production costs but delivers large welfare improvements. Consumer willingness to pay welfare premiums creates the market signal needed for investment.
