The proposed commercial farming of octopuses faces fundamental welfare obstacles rooted in the animals biology. Octopuses are solitary predators whose natural behavior involves individual territory defense — crowding them for production causes chronic stress, aggression, and cannibalism. Their short lifespan of 1 to 2 years and high cognitive complexity mean they have little opportunity to adapt to captive conditions. Welfare scientists have broadly opposed octopus farming pending development of standards that can address their unique behavioral and social needs.
