Hibernation management for companion tortoises is a critical welfare event - incorrect preparation and monitoring causes deaths that are largely preventable.
Tortoise hibernation welfare is highly vulnerable to mistakes - overwintering too warm causes increased metabolism without feeding, leading to starvation; too cold causes freezing injury. Hibernating a tortoise that has not achieved sufficient body weight for winter risks death through energy depletion. Pre-hibernation health assessment by a tortoise-experienced vet identifies animals not fit for hibernation. Regular weight monitoring during hibernation (monthly at minimum) provides early warning of problems. The high mortality rate of pet tortoises during hibernation reflects inadequate owner knowledge rather than inherent risk - with correct management, healthy tortoises hibernate safely.
