Laying Hen Nest Box Access Welfare

Access to suitable nest boxes is a fundamental welfare need for laying hens, as the motivation to lay in a secluded space is among the strongest drives in poultry.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Nesting motivation in hens has been demonstrated to be extraordinarily strong - hens will work hard to access a nest and show physiological stress responses when prevented. This means that systems denying nesting opportunities cause genuine suffering that persists across the laying period. Even in cage-free systems, inadequate nest provision or poor nest design creates daily competition and stress. Welfare assessment should include direct observation of nest availability and queuing behaviour.
