Modern commercial turkeys have been selectively bred for rapid growth to a degree that causes chronic welfare problems throughout their lives.
The commercial turkey is arguably the farm animal whose current standard form is furthest from a welfare-compatible body plan. The same genetic selection that produces profitable rapid growth creates a body that cannot function normally - turkeys so breast-heavy that walking is painful and natural reproduction is impossible. This represents a fundamental compromise of welfare at the genetic level, not merely a husbandry problem. Addressing it requires either breed selection toward slower-growing lines or regulatory standards limiting growth rate.
