Free-Range Egg Welfare Reality

Free-range egg systems offer significantly better welfare than caged alternatives, but the welfare reality varies enormously between farms.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Free-range certification guarantees outdoor access in principle but not welfare quality in practice. The welfare of a free-range hen depends on factors not captured in the label: flock size, range quality, pop hole provision, indoor space per bird, enrichment availability, and flock management practices. A hen in a 16,000-bird free-range unit who never reaches the range because of population pressure is not experiencing the welfare improvement the label implies. Higher-tier certifications - Soil Association organic, RSPCA Assured with enhanced standards - provide greater assurance of genuine welfare improvement.
