Pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID or Cushing's disease) is a common hormonal condition in older horses requiring lifelong management.
PPID significantly impacts equine welfare through laminitis, muscle wastage and the discomfort of an unsheded heavy coat. However, outcomes with early diagnosis and pergolide treatment are excellent - many horses enjoy years of quality life post-diagnosis. The challenge is owner recognition of early subtle signs and willingness to pursue testing.
