Recognising pain in farm animals requires training and validated assessment tools. Improving stockperson skills in pain recognition transforms welfare outcomes.
Unrecognised and untreated pain in farm animals is a major welfare problem. Stockpersons are the first line of welfare detection, but many lack formal training in species-specific pain recognition. Investment in training is one of the highest-return welfare interventions available on farm - it costs little and directly improves welfare for large numbers of animals.
