Crocodilians are complex reptiles with specific welfare needs that are frequently misunderstood in captive settings.
Crocodilian welfare is frequently underestimated due to their reptilian nature and perceived low cognitive capacity. However, evidence shows they have complex environmental and social needs, individual variation in behaviour, and capacity to suffer from inadequate provision. Good crocodilian welfare requires large, complex enclosures with thermal gradient management and appropriate social grouping.
