Moral uncertainty about the nature and extent of animal sentience should increase, not decrease, our concern for animal welfare under the precautionary principle.
Moral uncertainty about animal sentience is not a reason to ignore animal welfare - it is a reason to apply the precautionary principle seriously. Given that we cannot be certain which animals suffer and to what degree, ethical action involves taking the possibility of suffering seriously across a wide range of species. Applying only conservative certainty-based frameworks to animal welfare has historically allowed significant suffering that we later regretted.
