Bluefin Tuna Aquaculture Welfare

Atlantic and Pacific bluefin tuna are now farmed in significant numbers. Their welfare needs are complex and not fully addressed by current practices.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Bluefin tuna welfare in aquaculture represents one of the most challenging problems in fish welfare science. Their highly active, pelagic lifestyle is fundamentally incompatible with cage culture. Wild-caught ranched tuna experience extreme acute stress during capture. Pre-slaughter welfare standards are developing but far behind those for salmon. Given tuna price premiums, the industry has capacity to invest in welfare improvements if regulation requires it.
