The emerging field of wild animal suffering applies welfare science to understand and potentially reduce suffering that occurs in natural populations.
Wild animal suffering is quantitatively enormous - the vast majority of wild animal lives end in pain, starvation or predation. Recognising this does not mean accepting it as inevitable. Welfare science is beginning to identify interventions that reduce wild animal suffering without harmful ecological consequences. This is an early and controversial field, but the welfare stakes are enormous given the scale of wild animal populations.
