European seabass is one of the most widely farmed Mediterranean fish species, with welfare challenges at stocking, harvest and transport stages.
Farmed seabass welfare is receiving increasing attention as Mediterranean aquaculture expands. Aggression management through appropriate stocking density and environmental complexity is the primary ongoing welfare challenge. Pre-slaughter welfare for seabass is poorly regulated compared to salmon, with ice slurry stunning still common despite evidence of prolonged consciousness. Developing and mandating effective stunning protocols is a priority welfare need.
