Tilapia is one of the world most farmed fish species, with welfare challenges linked to intensive production practices in tropical countries.
Tilapia welfare receives less attention than salmonid welfare partly because tilapia are more physiologically robust. However, this tolerance should not be equated with welfare indifference - tilapia at the extremes of commercial production face significant welfare costs. Improving dissolved oxygen management, reducing crowding severity at harvest, and developing effective pre-slaughter stunning are the key welfare priorities for tilapia farming.
