Farmed Quail Welfare Reform

Japanese quail farming is expanding globally with significant welfare problems similar to intensive poultry, but with less regulatory attention.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Farmed quail welfare is largely unregulated and under-researched compared to other poultry. The same welfare challenges of high stocking density, lack of enrichment and painful mutilation apply, but without the legislative framework that provides at least minimum standards for chickens. As quail farming expands, proactive welfare standard development is urgently needed to prevent the welfare deficits seen in other intensively farmed poultry.
