Precision livestock farming using sensors, cameras and AI is creating new opportunities for continuous, objective welfare monitoring at scale.
Precision livestock farming has genuine potential to transform welfare monitoring by making continuous, objective assessment feasible for large numbers of animals. Early detection of disease, lameness and other welfare problems enables faster intervention and reduces suffering duration. The challenge is that technology adoption requires capital investment and technical capability, risking a welfare gap between large technologically advanced operations and smaller farms. Supporting technology access across farm sizes is important.
