Polecats are recovering in the UK following centuries of persecution. Understanding their welfare needs supports conservation management.
Polecat welfare has improved dramatically through legal protection and reduced gamekeeper persecution. The main ongoing welfare threats are road mortality and incidental capture in snares and traps set for other species. Snare reform that reduces the risk of non-target captures would significantly improve polecat welfare. Public and gamekeeper awareness that polecats are legally protected is also important, as accidental and deliberate persecution still occurs.
