Legislative recognition of farm animal sentience is advancing globally but the gap between recognition and practice remains wide.
Legal sentience recognition is a necessary foundation for welfare protection, but it is not sufficient. The gap between sentience acknowledgement and practical welfare standards is often enormous. Translating legal recognition into enforceable welfare standards requires sustained advocacy, political will and robust enforcement. Supporting both legislative advances and enforcement mechanisms is essential for welfare recognition to deliver real improvements for farm animals.
