Companion birds including parrots and finches are social species with complex social needs that are frequently unmet in captivity.
Companion bird welfare is significantly impaired when social birds are housed alone without adequate social contact. The pet bird industry and veterinary advice have historically underemphasised social needs, resulting in widespread single housing of species that evolved for flock living. Providing appropriate social housing - ideally same-species companions - or substantial daily human social interaction for single birds is a fundamental welfare requirement.
