Welfare Considerations

Cheetah cubs trafficked as pets undergo extreme trauma: separation from mothers before weaning, transport in overcrowded conditions, exposure to unfamiliar food, and placement in human households without appropriate social, spatial, or nutritional care. Even those that survive initial trauma develop behavioral abnormalities and chronic health problems from the combination of stress and nutritional deficiency. The welfare harm to individual cubs is severe; the population-level harm from removing breeding-age females to produce cubs threatens species survival.
