Water voles have suffered dramatic population declines. Mink control and habitat restoration are the key welfare and conservation interventions.
Water vole conservation requires mink management that itself raises welfare questions. The welfare of individual minks must be weighed against the conservation and welfare of water vole populations. Humane mink trapping and rapid killing by trained personnel minimises mink suffering while enabling water vole recovery. This is a genuine welfare trade-off with no perfect solution. Supporting habitat restoration that reduces both threats is the complementary welfare-positive approach.
