Zoo Felid Welfare

Large felids including lions, tigers and leopards have complex welfare needs in captivity that require significant space and environmental complexity.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Large felid welfare in captivity is inherently challenging given the mismatch between their natural home ranges and zoo enclosure sizes. Environmental complexity, feeding enrichment and social management appropriate to species biology can significantly improve welfare within these constraints. However, the fundamental limitation of space means large felid welfare at best represents a compromise. Facilities that maximise enrichment, minimise stressors and provide extensive complex space achieve the best outcomes within this constraint.
