Animal welfare labelling on food products is confusing and inconsistent. Reform would help consumers make informed welfare choices.
The current labelling landscape makes genuine welfare-informed purchasing extremely difficult for most consumers. Without clear, standardised, mandatory labelling of production method and welfare standard, purchasing decisions rely on brand trust and certification knowledge that most consumers do not have. Mandatory standardised labelling would create market accountability that incentivises welfare improvement across the industry. Supporting campaigns for labelling reform is a systemic welfare intervention that multiplies individual purchasing impact.
