Zebrafish (Danio rerio) are among the most widely used vertebrate animals in biomedical research, particularly for genetic studies, with growing attention to their welfare needs.
As zebrafish become ever more central to genetic and biomedical research, their welfare must be taken seriously. The legal gap regarding larval zebrafish welfare protection is concerning given evidence of neurological activity at early stages. Improving tank design, water quality standards, social housing, and experimental refinement is both an ethical requirement and consistent with improving research quality.
