Horse Welfare in Polo and Stick Sports

Polo ponies and horses used in mounted sports face specific welfare challenges including high-speed play, physical demands, spur and bit use, and sport-specific injury risks.

Key Facts

Polo ponies typically play multiple chukkas in a match, requiring significant fitness and exertion
Tail bandaging in polo to prevent tail interference with mallets can cause nerve damage if incorrectly applied
Whip use in polo is subject to fewer restrictions than in flat racing or showjumping
Polo ponies change ownership multiple times throughout their careers, creating welfare continuity challenges
Tendon and ligament injuries are common in polo horses due to the stop-start nature of the game
Hurlingham Polo Association and national bodies have welfare guidelines but enforcement is inconsistent

Welfare Considerations

Polo represents a significant welfare challenge due to high physical demands, widespread use of restrictive equipment, and the intense competitive environment. The welfare of individual polo ponies depends heavily on the values and practices of individual owners and riders, with large variation between high-standard and poor-standard operations. Better enforcement of welfare guidelines, education, and transparent welfare auditing are needed.

What You Can Do

Support polo associations that have strong, enforceable welfare rules
Advocate for standardised welfare auditing at polo tournaments
Report suspected welfare violations at polo events to the relevant national body
Support retired polo pony re-homing programmes
Raise awareness about polo horse welfare as part of broader equestrian welfare discussions
