Farmers' ability to recognise pain in livestock animals is critical for prompt treatment, yet training in pain assessment remains inconsistently integrated into agricultural education.
The ability of farmers to recognise and respond to pain in their animals is the foundation of on-farm welfare. Without accurate pain recognition, even well-intentioned farmers cannot provide appropriate and timely treatment. Embedding pain assessment tools into agricultural education, veterinary continuing professional development, and farm assurance scheme requirements would measurably improve welfare outcomes across UK livestock production.
