Zoo Polar Bear Welfare and Arctic Conservation

Polar bears present exceptional welfare challenges in captivity due to their enormous home ranges, seasonal behaviour patterns, and specific environmental needs that temperate zoos struggle to meet.

Key Facts

Wild polar bears have home ranges of 50,000-300,000 square kilometres - among the largest of any terrestrial mammal
Polar bear welfare in captivity is associated with high rates of stereotypic pacing and swimming
Some European zoos have phased out polar bear keeping due to welfare and conservation arguments
Temperature management for polar bears in warm climates requires significant infrastructure investment
Polar bear conservation focus has shifted to sea ice habitat protection and climate action
Some argue that captive polar bears cannot contribute meaningfully to wild population conservation given their specialist habitat needs

Welfare Considerations

Polar bear welfare in captivity represents one of the starkest mismatches between a species' natural life and what zoo environments can provide. The compelling welfare case for phasing out polar bear keeping must be balanced against the potential conservation communication role they play in raising awareness of Arctic climate threats. Zoos keeping polar bears have an obligation to invest heavily in welfare provision while honestly assessing whether conservation benefits justify ongoing captivity.

What You Can Do

Support zoos transitioning away from polar bear keeping where welfare cannot be adequately met
Donate to Arctic conservation organisations working on sea ice and climate protection
Advocate for zoo accreditation bodies to require rigorous welfare justification for polar bear keeping
Support climate action as the most important long-term polar bear conservation measure
Engage with zoo conservation education about polar bears and Arctic ecosystems
