The quality of human-animal relationships on farms, determined by stockperson attitude and behaviour, is one of the strongest predictors of livestock welfare and production outcomes.
Stockperson quality is a largely invisible but profoundly important determinant of farm animal welfare. The relationship between farmer attitudes, handling behaviour, and animal welfare and productivity is well established. Interventions that improve stockperson attitudes - not just skills - achieve more durable welfare improvements than technical training alone. Recognising stockpersonship as a professional skill requiring education, support, and monitoring is essential for systemic welfare improvement.
