The refinement principle of the 3Rs framework aims to minimise pain, suffering, and distress in laboratory animals while still achieving valid scientific results.
Refinement is arguably the most immediately achievable of the 3Rs, as it improves welfare within current research frameworks without requiring wholesale replacement of animal models. The evidence that refinements improve both welfare and scientific quality means there is no trade-off - well-applied refinements benefit both animals and research outcomes. Systematic implementation of refinement across the UK research sector could dramatically reduce animal suffering without reducing research productivity.
