Climate-smart agriculture aims to reduce emissions while improving food security, with complex interactions with animal welfare that create both trade-offs and co-benefits.
The relationship between animal welfare and climate change is complex and cannot be reduced to simple trade-offs. Higher welfare production systems sometimes have higher per-unit emissions but lower total emissions due to fewer animals. The most welfare-positive dietary shift - toward plant-based diets supplemented with certified higher welfare animal products - is also broadly climate-beneficial. Framing welfare and climate as competing concerns misrepresents a fundamentally aligned agenda.
