Dental pain in dogs and cats is chronically underrecognised by owners and sometimes veterinary professionals, leading to prolonged suffering from conditions that are highly treatable.
Dental pain recognition is a significant veterinary and owner education challenge. The stoicism of companion animals in pain, combined with the gradual onset of dental disease, creates conditions where years of chronic pain can go unaddressed. Regular dental examinations, proactive veterinary communication about dental disease, and owner education about subtle pain signs would collectively reduce the burden of dental pain in companion animals significantly.
