Backyard and garden chicken flocks have grown rapidly in popularity, but their welfare is not always well understood by first-time keepers, leading to preventable suffering.
Backyard hen keeping can provide excellent welfare for individual birds when done well - access to outdoor space, social companions, dust bathing, and appropriate nutrition represent genuine improvements on commercial conditions. However, uninformed or unprepared keepers inadvertently cause suffering through inadequate housing, failure to identify health problems, and lack of veterinary access. The British Hen Welfare Trust provides excellent guidance and support for new keepers. Red mite prevention, respiratory disease monitoring, and understanding reproductive health in laying hens are the most important areas for new keepers to learn.
