Farm Animal Welfare

Animal Welfare in Organic Farming Systems

Organic farming standards generally require higher animal welfare outcomes than conventional systems, but significant variation exists within organic certification and welfare is not always the primary motivation for organic farming.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Organic farming represents a genuine improvement in many welfare outcomes compared to conventional intensive farming, but it is not synonymous with optimised welfare. The mandatory outdoor access, higher space allowances, and reduced disease management through prevention rather than cure all represent meaningful welfare benefits. However, organic standards sometimes create tensions - the restriction on synthetic pain relief, for example, can leave animals untreated. And outdoor access in poorly managed systems can expose animals to parasites, extreme weather, and predation. The best welfare outcomes come from combining organic principles with strong welfare science and proactive veterinary care.
