Pig Welfare in Free-Range Outdoor Systems

Free-range and outdoor pig systems offer important welfare advantages over indoor housing, but also present specific challenges around weather, disease, and land management.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Outdoor pig systems represent a genuine welfare improvement that enables pigs to perform natural behaviours including rooting, exploration, and wallowing that are impossible in indoor systems. The welfare advantages are substantial and well-documented. However, outdoor systems are not automatically high welfare: inadequate shelter, unmanaged land, and insufficient shade or wallowing facilities create their own welfare challenges. The best outdoor pig systems proactively manage weather risks, rotate land to prevent poaching, provide adequate supplementary shelter, and invest in stockperson skills for monitoring individual pig health across large outdoor areas.
