Foie gras production through force-feeding (gavage) is widely considered one of the most welfare-compromising practices in food production, and is banned in many countries.
The welfare science on foie gras production is among the most unambiguous in farm animal welfare: force-feeding to pathological liver enlargement causes suffering that is difficult to justify on any welfare grounds. The banning of production in the UK and many other countries reflects this scientific consensus. However, continued legal imports mean consumers in countries that have banned production can still purchase the product. Closing the import loophole - as the UK has considered - would complete the welfare protection begun by the production ban. For consumers, avoiding foie gras entirely is the most direct welfare action.
