Farmed Pangasius (Basa) Welfare

Pangasius catfish, sold widely in the UK as basa or river cobbler, are farmed in very high densities in Vietnamese rivers, with emerging welfare concerns about the conditions of intensive production.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Pangasius welfare sits in the same uncertain territory as other tropical aquaculture species: the fish clearly have capacity for stress responses and nociception, but welfare standards in major producing countries remain very low. The combination of extreme stocking densities, potentially poor water quality, and limited veterinary oversight creates conditions likely to involve significant chronic stress. Consumer awareness of Pangasius welfare is very low - it is often purchased purely on price. Certification schemes (ASC) provide some environmental assurance but welfare coverage is limited. Until welfare standards improve substantially, Pangasius represents a species where welfare considerations support reduced consumption or substitution.
