Precision livestock farming technologies including sensors, cameras, and machine learning are enabling real-time welfare monitoring at a scale previously impossible, transforming farm welfare management.
Precision livestock farming represents a genuine welfare opportunity because it addresses one of the most fundamental limitations of farm welfare - the impossibility of monitoring individual animals across large flocks and herds manually. Technology that detects lameness, disease, and behavioural abnormalities earlier than human observation enables earlier welfare intervention. However, PLF is not a substitute for welfare-minded stockpersonship - it is a tool that enhances the capacity of skilled stockpersons. The risk is that PLF becomes a marketing tool for 'high-tech' farming without genuine welfare improvement, or that it is used to justify reducing human stockperson contact with animals. Genuine welfare improvement requires PLF to be combined with, not substituted for, skilled, attentive stockpersonship.
