Urban foxes face welfare challenges concentrated in a small geographic area with high human population density. Vehicle collisions cause traumatic injuries. Mange causes prolonged suffering from the intense pruritic response to sarcoptic mite infestation — foxes with mange scratch continuously, losing condition rapidly and developing secondary bacterial infections. Lethal control of urban fox populations in response to conflict causes acute welfare harm while being ineffective at reducing population size due to rapid recolonization. Mange treatment programs in affected neighborhoods can prevent the most severe welfare outcomes.
