Cat Welfare in Rescue and Rehoming

Cat rescue and rehoming centres face significant welfare challenges including overcrowding, respiratory disease, stress, and the difficulty of adequately socialising cats for successful adoption.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Cat rescue welfare is a systemic challenge shaped by the scale of abandoned, stray, and owner-surrendered cats in the UK. The rescue centre environment - even a well-run one - is inherently stressful for most cats, and long stays compound this stress into chronic welfare problems. Foster-based models offer better welfare by keeping cats in home environments, but require larger volunteer networks and more complex management. The most effective welfare intervention upstream is reducing the number of cats entering rescue through neutering programmes, owner support, and responsible breeding regulation. For cats already in rescue, enrichment, skilled staff, and rapid rehoming are the welfare priorities.
